about

‘Miss Johnson’s’ is a popular reel which is contained in both O’Neill’s 1001 (no. 626) and Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (p. 27), compiled and published by William Bradbury Ryan in 1883. The book offers a snapshot of vernacular and folk music in America at that time and contains many tunes of Irish origin. I fell for the tune when I heard Paddy Cronin playing the second part with some great slurred phrases. ‘The Primrose Lass’ is contained in Ryan’s Mammoth (p. 11) but I’m playing a slightly different version here. The setting of the ‘Five Mile Chase’ was played by east Clare whistle player, Joe Bane. Flute player, Jim Brody recorded Joe playing it on a tape in Feakle in 1983.
